For several years I have known that I'm losing my hearing. I can still appreciate music, so I'm not profoundly deaf yet, but for my age I have a significant hearing loss.

Today, we had a teacher's meeting in which we were expected to share views and observations about what should be expected of our students at the various levels of language acquisition. At least 2 people there, each time I explained that I didn't hear well, lowered their voices even further so there was no way in hades that I could understand them!!!!! I felt like yelling, "If you want me to hear you, speak up, dammit!" Of course teachers can't talk like that in meetings. And I don't usually swear anywhere. But it's becoming extremely frustrating. When people speak clearly, I can understand them fine. With constant tinnitus, I know someone is talking, but can't understand mumbling or whispering. Grrrrrrrr.

So today I have finally become fed up with the whole thing. Made an appointment to get my hearing officially evaluated. My insurance is supposed to pay for it, but I will need a referral. That's the next thing on the to do list.

Stay tuned for the continuing saga...

People who don't speak clearly, even when told to do so, are irritating, for sure. That's as bad as talking to someone from another room, and expecting them to hear you. My mom has not been able to break herself of that habit, even though my dad is pretty hard of hearing, even with his hearing aids in.

I'll be praying you can get that referral quickly and that everything else falls into place. Not to mention that your fellow teachers will be more considerate!
