Weird weather and eating crow
May. 6th, 2007 03:07 pmBecause of the events of this past Friday evening, I promise not to begrudge airtime to our intrepid weather people. Usually they seem to break in on programs just at the moment when the plot is about the reach its resolution when the wind reaches 40 mph in the farthest corner of the state. Considering, however, that Friday evening at about 9:45 a Kansas town was virtually blown off the map, they can be excused. (as if I really had authority to have an opinion in the matter...)
Greensburg KS, home of the world's largest hand dug well, has a lot of cleaning up to do before it looks like a town again. Because of our weather people, they had about 20 minutes to get to shelter so loss of human life was not as great as could be feared in such a situation. And a tornado that cuts a path of destruction about 100 miles long and a mile wide could be considered deserving of 12 straight hours of coverage.
And again from a completely selfish perspective, if this is what it takes to replace news of Anna Nichole Smith et al, I'd rather grumble about ANS et al.
Pray for the people of Greensburg and the other small towns that aren't getting the media attention.
